Four ways library patrons use PressReader besides reading the news

Written by PressReader Team | Sep 18, 2025 7:00:00 AM

Every day, hundreds of thousands of readers around the world access PressReader through their library to stay up to date with the news. From regional updates in local newspapers to breaking stories in global publications, the platform has news for every patron.

But PressReader has even more to offer...

In this post, we’ll outline four other ways library patrons get value from PressReader (which also means four extra ways librarians can make their budget stretch that bit further!)

To learn a new language

As we covered in a recent blog post, reading newspapers and magazines is a great way to support language learning.

Reading a new language in the context of native articles exposes the reader to vocabulary, sentence structure and idiomatic expressions that are used in real life (opposed to the overly formal textbook versions). It can also provide a sense of cultural immersion by providing insight into a region's current affairs as well as its societal values and norms.

Over at Babbel, the language-learning platform, blogger Thomas Moore Devlin specifically recommends that language students use PressReader because it provides newspapers and magazines from around the world in more than 60 languages. "You can search through the publications by language and topic, so you can discover the news that fits your niche," he explains.

Patrons also take advantage of PressReader’s translation feature, which can convert articles into more than 20 languages. This allows them to compare the same content in multiple languages to confirm their understanding and check unfamiliar words and phrases.

To read about their hobbies (and discover new ones!)

Our roots may lie in newspapers, but PressReader also provides access to thousands of leading magazines from around the world, too!

Whether they’re looking for tips to cultivate the perfect summer garden, the latest innovations in science and technology, or travel guides for their upcoming trip to Japan, the PressReader catalog has a magazine to cover the hobbies and interests of every patron.

What’s more, the PressReader platform recreates the reading experience of a magazine, pictures and all, so patrons can enjoy the publication the way it was intended.

To supplement academic research

PressReader’s diverse catalog of newspapers and magazines provides readers with immediate access to current events, international perspectives and niche insights all in one place. That makes the platform a powerful tool for academic research (and is a key reason why leading educational institutions around the world offer PressReader as a resource for their students!)

New issues are available on the platform as soon as they hit the newsstands, giving users real-time insight into how stories are evolving. Plus, the platform has several built-in features specifically designed to aid research.

So, whether a patron is a political science student seeking to understand how a topic is perceived across a variety of countries, or a high schooler tasked with finding credible coverage on a classroom topic, PressReader is a trusted tool to support their research.

To unwind and have fun with their favorite puzzles

Just like a traditional newspaper has a daily puzzle page, the PressReader platform has a set of daily, interactive puzzles. It’s a great way for library patrons to unwind and discover a fun, daily ritual in the same platform as their favorite newspapers and magazines.

Patrons can enjoy 10 classic puzzles, provided by the same premium puzzle provider that serves publishers like The Guardian and USA Today. PressReader’s puzzles include fan-favorites like sudoku, crosswords and word searches. Plus, each puzzle provides hints, timers and solution checks.

For librarians that are often asked to photocopy paper copies of the daily puzzle pages for their patrons, digital puzzles are a far more sustainable and efficient option!

[Bonus Entry] To listen to the news

Ok, this one is a bit of a loophole given the criteria of the post, but listening is technically different to reading!

With PressReader’s Text-to-Speech feature, library patrons can listen to any article from any publication of their choice, with just a click. So, whether they prefer to listen to their news while completing other tasks or during their commute, or have a visual impairment which means reading isn’t a viable option, every patron can enjoy their favorite newspapers and magazines with PressReader.
