Apple is killing the Newsstand, and why it’s great news for publishers.
Publishers can finally say goodbye to the Apple newsstand. Self-proclaimed to be the best newspaper and magazine app available to consumers, many publishers felt their titles were buried, never marketed and trapped inside the Newsstand, with no opportunity to escape.
Although the Newsstand is quickly on its way out, Apple has plans to replace it with a Flipboard-style aggregated experience that features curated lists of content for individual customers.
The death of the Newsstand is good news publishers. Soon all Newsstand apps, including yours, will become standalone apps during this transition phase. This means that now you will have the opportunity to market and sell your own apps in the App Store and push content directly to consumers, without them having to navigate through an endless catalogue on the Newsstands.
