The Insider: Traveling with DestinAsian
The new year is well underway, which means it’s time to start planning that next vacation—who isn’t more motivated than when they have something to look forward to? For advice from some travel industry experts, we’ve turned to DestinAsian, one of the premier luxury travel magazines in Southeast Asia, though their globetrotting coverage is by no means limited to one region.
The Insider hunted down exclusive travel tips and inspiration from the magazine’s 10th annual Readers’ Choice Awards, for which they polled nearly 4,000 of their readers for their favorite hotels, spas, destinations, airlines, and more in Asia-Pacific. The results? A comprehensive guide to how to travel the region in luxury and style. Here’s a peak at some of the picks, along with exclusive tips from the editors about each one.
This sleek resort on the Seminyak shoreline is fronted by a multitiered lagoon pool. Stats: 237 rooms and villas; 3 bars; 2 restaurants. Readers say: “A hip atmosphere in a spectacular location.” Don’t miss: The oxygen lounge at Away Spa.
Editor’s Tip: Steps away is the Potato Head Beach Club, one of Seminyak’s coolest hangouts with cocktails designed by famous bartenders from around the world, amazing people watching, and oftentimes concerts and DJs at night.
A jewel-box of a glassy low-rise right on Marina Bay, with Andre Fu interiors, panoramic views, and heritage touches. Stats: 98 rooms; 1 bar; 3 restaurants. Readers say: “Super stylish design” and “a small but fantastic boutique hotel.” Don’t miss : Hawker food given a gourmet twist at The Clifford Pier, opened last June on its namesake 1927 heritage site.
Editor’s Tip: When it opens later this year, the National Gallery Singapore will be just a 10-minute walk away, and it’s looking to be the best new museum in the city.
This bay-windowed high-rise is set above one of the city’s premier shopping malls, Plaza Indonesia. Stats: 450 rooms; 2 bars; 5 restaurants. Readers say: “Spacious rooms in the best location in the city.” Don’t miss: Watching the spectacle of Jakarta’s notorious rush-hour traffic from the serenity of the Fountain Lounge.
Editor’s Tip: This hotel may be in the center of the city’s hub-bub, but it’s also a very short cab ride from Taman Suropati, the city’s nicest green space. Artists and musicians like to hang out here, so expect to see some interesting handicrafts for sale and hear some music in the evenings.
Best Airport: Changi Airport
Editor’s Tip: If you have a time to spare, there’s a gorgeous pool and jacuzzi in Terminal 1 that you can use for a small cost.
Best City: Bangkok
Editor’s Tip: Bangkok’s craft beer scene is really taking off. Hidden on a back street in Thonglor, Mikkeler is one of our favorite spots, with art all over its walls and 30 craft beers on tap.
