Record-Setting Win in the Women's Biathlon
Record-Setting Win: Darya Domracheva of Belarus is the first woman to win three biathlon gold medals at the same Olympics. Domracheva won the pursuit and individual race last week, and today won the 12.5-kilometer mass start race. Domracheva’s teammates also won gold in both the mens’ and women’s aerials. Defector Wins Gold: Russia’s Viktor Ahn, born Ahn Hyun-soo in Korea, recently won short track gold and bronze medals at the Sochi Winter Olympics. Ahn became a Russian citizen in 2011. Though it has been more than two years since Ahn’s defection, reasons behind his decision came back into the national spotlight during the Olympics, with his victories providing a stark contrast to Koreans’ struggles on the ice. Hockey update: The Stanley Cup made an appearance at the Olympics on Monday, making several stops around Olympic Park, including the USA House and Canada House. “It’s yours — for an hour,” Canadian Olympic Committee President Marcel Aubut told the packed house. NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman says the league’s possible participation in the 2018 Olympics hasn’t been and won’t be discussed during the Sochi Games.
