London 2012 Paralympic Games Catch Up
The Games may be over but the Paralympics have brought Britain back to life!
Last Wednesday, the Opening Ceremonies welcomed 165 countries and 4,200 Paralympians. The theme was “Enlightenment” and featured a voyage across “a sea of ideas”. And who better to welcome the Paralympians than Stephen Hawking, a world renown physicist that has shown the world that physical disabilities don’t limit human potential.
It’s already Day 8 so let’s jump right into the Games!
Italian ex-Formula One Star, Alex Zanardi, celebrated a triumphant victory today after winning Gold in the Men’s Individual H4 Time Trial. Zanardi lost both his legs in a horrific crash in 2001 and only stopped motor racing 3 years ago. He finished more than 27 seconds ahead of German Norbert Mosandl, with American Oscar Sanchez taking home the bronze.
Canada’s own Summer Mortimer celebrated a record setting win yesterday after winning her second Gold medal in Women’s S10 backstroke. She set a new world record time of just one minute and 5.09 seconds, beating New Zealand’s Sophie Pasco by 1.60 seconds. Shireen Shapiro of South Africa took home the Bronze at 1:09.02.
