London 2012 Games Closing Ceremonies
A dazzling display of fireworks and performances from Britain’s top talent brought the London 2012 Games to an end. From supermodel Kate Moss to the new boy band One Direction and a show stopping reunion with the Spice Girls, there was something for everyone. With 80,000 fans watching, screaming, and singing along, organizers estimated 300 million or more were watching from home.
Following Games tradition, a portion of the celebrations were turned over to Brazil, host of the 2016 Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro, where the mayor of London handed the Games flag back to the International Olympic Committee boss, Jacques Rogge.
Weeks earlier, Londoners were worried the Games would turn into a huge fiasco, with security woes and empty seats but Team Great Britain proved it was all worth it. They took home their biggest medal haul since 1908, a grand total of 65 medals, 29 of them Gold, 17 Silver, and 19 Bronze.
